Undergraduate Laboratory Improvements

I have been awarded a Course Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement grant (DUE-0126105) from the National Science Foundation to develop several lab activities centered around a reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) apparatus. The experiments are designed to give students hands-on experience with research grade equipment while learning about the wave nature of matter and using beams of particles (in this case electrons) as experimental probes. As part of this project I have developed the following lab manuals to guide students through introductory vacuum techniques and proper use of the equipment in addition to the experiments themselves.

  • Introduction to Vacuum Technology - PDF
  • Using the RHEED system - PDF
  • Polycrystalline Diffraction Lab - PDF
  • RHEED Lab - PDF
